Project 05: 'this simulation sux'
We re-released our hand-painted collection in a *new black colorway* that was on display alongside new accessories at Phorm Studios on Oct. 4th.
In collaboration with the Brooklyn-based event series Funneled Smoke, “this simulation sux” was an evening long audio-visual experience featuring electronic music performances, live painting by Luz Angélica Fernández, and visual installations by Yiyang Cao.
“this simulation sux” conveys a mutual feeling of (dis)comfort as we cope with a presently mundane dystopian reality. Though social media promotes connection it also alienates its users with an overstimulating flow of information. Hecha / 做 created a liminal space that constructs an alternative reality that nudges towards being in the present moment, and reconsiders the systems that connect us.
The event lifts inspiration from “Cyberia” a virtual nightclub characterized in the cult anime Serial Experiments Lain and book of the same name by media theorist Douglas Rushkoff
ARTISTS:
Serpent In a Straight Line is the live performance project from Brooklyn based artist George De Moura. The sound is an integration of cerebral cyber techno and avant-garde electronic composition. He is the founder of the New York based event series Funneled Smoke, which features interdisciplinary programming that attempts to merge visual art, experimental music, immersive environments, and dance music culture. He will be presenting new work that is a reflection on the rave’s potential for functioning as a utopian commune.
Speaker Music is a digital audio and extended media praxis by rhythmanalyst DeForrest Brown Jr., presenting “Empathy Gap”, a rhythmanalytic investigation of an offline commons within a schizophrenic culture of excess; mobilizing free improvised electronic percussion and stereophonic audio recordings into the production of a rhythmic body, quivering the nexus event of the moment into a collapsed “nonpulsed time,” toward a shared sphere of intimacy.

Via App is an alias of Dylan Scheer, Brooklyn based experimental synthesist, sonic field researcher, electronic composer and performer, and club chaos conduit. Their performance on October 4 will be an homage to the prophetic 1998 anime series Serial Experiments Lain and the dimensional gateway-bordering nightclub therein, Cyberia. The work will reference the mutinous hard breaks and alienation/undead synths of the OST and its bootleg counterpart.

Yiyang Cao (b. 1991, Hangzhou, China) is a video artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA in Film/Animation/Video at Rhode Island School of Design. Through videos, participatory sculptural environments, and live performances, Yiyang’s work investigates the rhetorics of time in new media; exploring the cross-pollination between out-of-screen and in-screen time, she attempts to provoke dimensional thought on perception and our collective states of being.
